More Than A Gathering
These shots didn't make it into my "Portfolio," yet they're some of my favorites.
This shoot was the first opportunity I had to create something that was purely my vision. I've had many opportunities to collaborate or execute productions with my stamp of approval, but nothing solely mine from conception to end. More than anything, I knew I wanted to no NEEDED to have Pasifika in front of the camera, and it was equally as important to have Pasifika behind the camera—which ended up being predominately Polynesians. Ensuring every set I set foot on is Disability, Queer, and BIPOC-friendly is more valuable than any beautiful Editorial opportunity. That meant a full crew of Black, Indigenous, and Disabled QTPOC. A safe zone to bump some of our music, act a fool, and ask any questions we had. It truly felt healing on set.
I intended the shoot to be Queer-centered, without a traditional Bride and Groom. I wanted a "Wedding Party" shoot that was very non-traditional, leaving you to question who is who? Unfortunately, some of our models dropped last minute. Fortunately, one of the models had her husband on set, who had a suit in his car, so everything worked out. I spent a few weeks sourcing everything, creating the floral centerpieces, and a few hours building/styling the set. As a Disabled person, it was very labor-intensive but worth it. It was immensely joyful, full of laughter, and DELICIOUS (the food, specifically the cake, was out of this world). And yes, he really played the guitar and serenaded us with a Profetik original song he wrote in college. A cherished moment I'll forever remember.
